Since
its inception, Orana Wildlife park has been extremely fortunate
to attract a wonderful variety of people eager to volunteer
their skills and time.
A formal Volunteer scheme was established in 1988 by Bev
Shepherd and it still thrives today. Between 85-100 people
give their time to the Park in the name of conservation
and education.
In the past 12 years, nine of our precious vollies have
completed more then 5,000 hours each at the park, an additional
three vollies have done an awe inspiring 10,000 hours each.
Volunteers run our 'Safari Shuttle' service for visitors,
providing transportation and a quality commentary about
the park's animals. They also guide 'Walk-about' Tours twice
daily. The tours follow the Park's feed timetable and give
visitors a chance to see the animals up close and personal,
while also having the chance to ask questions and learn
more about the world's rare creatures.
New
volunteers undergo a training course which will
equip them with the knowledge and skill to fulfill
their chosen job. The training is thorough but not
arduous. Once trained a volunteer must undertake
to work two days per month although many volunteers
choose to work one or more days per week. There
is a roster system so volunteers can indicate which
days they will be coming to the Park. The volunteer
group have an active social calendar with outings
and functions.
