Kererū (NZ Wood Pigeon)

Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae

Fun Facts:

Kereru are important seed dispersers, for some of our larger fruiting trees. This is because their wide mouths, allow the seeds to stay so they can distribute them throughout the forest. They will sometimes gorge so heavily on ripe fruit that they become very full (or “drunk”) and have been known to fall out of trees.
