New zealand is at the ORANGE Setting of the COVID-19 Protection Framework (Traffic lights).
Orana Wildlife Park is no longer a My Vaccine Pass venue.
A reminder that under the orange setting, visitors are required to wear masks while indoors (including aviaries), on our shuttle, at animal feeds and when in close proximity to people and animals.
Thank you for helping to keep our staff and precious animals safe.
Why do you no longer require My Vaccine Passes?
All decisions made continue to be based around ensuring we do everything we can possibly do in order to keep our team and our precious animals safe. When determining whether or not the Park would remain a Vaccine Pass facility, Orana reviewed our robust risk assessment conducted in November 2021, based on the ever-changing nature of the pandemic, alongside updated government recommendations. The safety and wellbeing of our staff, animals and visitors is our utmost priority. We continue to practice the additional safety regimes implemented since the beginning of the pandemic to ensure the safety of everyone, including increased cleaning and hygiene standards for all areas of our operation, maintaining physical distancing and wearing a mask indoors, on our shuttle and while at any animal encounters (our front facing team will also be wearing masks). We will continue to monitor our response as the COVID pandemic remains an evolving situation.
Do I still need to wear a mask?
Yes, all current mask-wearing protocols at the Park will remain in place until further notice. Visitors will be expected to continue to wear masks in all enclosed buildings (e.g. entry building, gift shop, the café, Great Ape Centre, Kiwi House), on our safari shuttle plus also if they wish to be on platforms or within aviaries in close proximity (2m) to animals or staff at feed times. Of course, all additional staff mask-wearing requirements remain in place, such as in food preparation areas.
Why do I need to wear a mask when I am near animals?
We hold key species at risk of contracting COVID-19 from humans (e.g. lions and gorilla). Overseas, some zoo animals have died after contracting COVID-19. A Zoetis vaccine for zoo animals is currently being rolled-out in the US. This vaccine is not available in New Zealand.
What are you doing to protect the animals?
All of our animal keepers wear masks when preparing food, when in close proximity to our precious animals and while indoors.
We ask our visitors wear masks when they are within 2m of our animals also.
Is the café open?
The café is open and following all regulations relating to hospitality.
Masks are required to be worn while in the café unless seated.
Does the animal feed schedule change?
All animal presentations continue, though unfortunately our Lion Encounter remains unavailable.
Can I bring my school group to Orana?
Zoo School is open for business as normal and we would love to see you. Please contact our education team here and they will contact you directly to discuss your visit and any questions you may have.
If the above does not answer your question, please contact us on firstname.lastname@example.org
